Understanding Planetary Strength

A planet’s strength in a Jathagam depends on its position in a Rasi. There are several states:

1. Uccha (Exaltation) - உச்ச நிலை

• Planet is in its strongest position
• Gives maximum beneficial results
• Like a king on his throne

2. Neecha (Debilitation) - நீச நிலை

• Planet is in its weakest position
• Struggles to give results
• Like a king in prison

3. Moolatrikona - மூலத்திரிகோணம்

• Planet’s own throne within its sign
• Almost as strong as exaltation
• Comfortable and powerful

4. Swa-Rasi (Own Sign) - சொந்த ராசி

• Planet in its own house
• Strong and comfortable
• Like being at home

5. Friend’s Sign - நண்பர் ராசி

• Planet in a friendly sign
• Moderately strong
• Like visiting a friend’s house

6. Neutral Sign - நடுநிலை ராசி

• Neither good nor bad
• Moderate results

7. Enemy’s Sign - எதிரி ராசி

• Uncomfortable position
• Weak results
• Like being in hostile territory

Planetary Relationships - கிரக உறவுகள்

Natural Friendships and Enmities

Each planet has permanent friends, enemies, and neutral planets. These relationships are eternal and don’t change.

Why Planetary Friendships Matter

In a Jathagam:

1. Aspect (பார்வை):

   • Friendly planets aspecting each other = Good
   • Enemy planets aspecting = Creates tension

2. Conjunction (சேர்க்கை):

   • Friends together = Beneficial combination
   • Enemies together = Planetary war (Graha Yuddha)

3. Dasha Periods:

   • Friend’s Dasha after current Dasha = Smooth transition
   • Enemy’s Dasha = Challenging transition

4. House Lordship:

   • Friendly planet owning good houses = Very beneficial
   • Enemy planet owning bad houses = Reduces negativity

Example:

• Jupiter (குரு) is friends with Sun, Moon, Mars
• If Jupiter is in Leo (Sun’s house) = Very strong (friend’s house)
• If Jupiter is in Capricorn = Debilitated (enemy Saturn’s house)

The 12 Bhavas (Houses) - 12 வீடுகள்

What are Bhavas?

Bhava (பாவம்) means “house” or “abode” in Sanskrit.

The Jathagam chart is divided into 12 houses, each representing different areas of life. The houses are fixed based on the Lagna (Ascendant), which is the 1st house.

Important Concepts:

• Lagna (லக்னம்) = 1st House = Ascendant = Rising sign at time of birth
• Houses rotate counter-clockwise in South Indian chart
• Each house represents specific life areas
• Planets placed in houses influence those areas

By Nature - இயல்பு வகை:

1. Kendras (கேந்திரங்கள்) - Angular Houses (Pillars)

• Houses: 1, 4, 7, 10
• Most powerful houses (விஷ்ணு ஸ்தானம் - Vishnu Sthana)
• Planets here give strong results
• Like four pillars supporting life

2. Trikonas (திரிகோணங்கள்) - Trinal Houses (Trine)

• Houses: 1, 5, 9
• Houses of Dharma (தர்ம வீடுகள்)
• Most auspicious houses (லக்ஷ்மி ஸ்தானம் - Lakshmi Sthana)
• Bring luck and fortune

3. Upachayas (உபசயங்கள்) - Growing Houses

• Houses: 3, 6, 10, 11
• Improve with time and effort
• Malefic planets do well here
• Growth-oriented areas

4. Dusthanas (துஷ்டானங்கள்) - Difficult Houses

5. Marakas (மாரகங்கள்) - Death-Inflicting Houses

• Houses: 2, 7
• Can cause death during their Dasha

Natural Benefics (சுப கிரகங்கள்):

• Jupiter (குரு) - Great benefic
• Venus (சுக்கிரன்) - Lesser benefic

Introduction to Major Doshas - தோஷங்களின் அறிமுகம்

What is a Dosha?

Dosha (தோஷம்) means “defect” or “affliction” in Sanskrit.

A Dosha occurs when planets are placed in certain unfavorable positions that create challenges in specific life areas. Not all Doshas are bad - some have exceptions and cancellations.

Common Doshas we’ll cover in Part 4:

1. Chevvai Dosham (Manglik Dosha) - செவ்வாய் தோஷம்

Quick Overview:

When it occurs:

• Mars in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from Lagna
• Also checked from Moon and Venus

Effects:

• Delays or problems in marriage
• Conflicts with spouse
• Possible separation or widowhood (in severe cases)

Severity:

• Partial Chevvai: Mars in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 (less severe)
• Full Chevvai: Mars in specific degrees and combinations

Cancellations:

• If both bride and groom have Chevvai Dosham
• If Mars is in own/exalted sign
• Certain age exceptions (after 28 years)

2. Sade Sati (7½ Sani) - ஏழரை சனி

Quick Overview:

When it occurs:

• Saturn transiting through:
  • 12th house from your Moon Rasi
  • Your Moon Rasi itself
  • 2nd house from your Moon Rasi
• Total duration: 7.5 years

Three Phases:

1. Arohanam (ஏறும் சனி) - Saturn in 12th = Rising phase (Most difficult)
2. Madhya (நடுவில் சனி) - Saturn in your Rasi = Peak phase
3. Avarohanam (இறங்கும் சனி) - Saturn in 2nd = Setting phase (Easing)

Effects:

• Delays, obstacles, struggles
• Health issues, mental stress
• Financial difficulties
• Career challenges
• BUT also brings maturity and wisdom

• Saturn is in Aquarius (கும்பம்)

3. Kaal Sarpa Dosha - காலசர்ப தோஷம்

Quick Overview:

When it occurs:

• All 7 planets (Sun to Saturn) are between Rahu and Ketu
• Forms a “serpent” formation in the chart

12 Types: Based on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy (12 different types - each with different effects)

Effects:

• Delays in success despite efforts
• Mental anxiety, bad dreams
• Health issues
• Relationship challenges
• BUT also gives sudden success after struggle

Partial vs Full:

• Full Kaal Sarpa: All planets strictly between Rahu-Ketu
• Partial: One or more planets outside the axis (less severe)
