Jathagam Guide - Part 3: Vimshottari Dasha System
ஜாதகம் வழிகாட்டி - பாகம் 3: விம்சோத்தரி தசா முறை
Welcome to Part 3 - the most practical section for timing life events using the Vimshottari Dasha System (விம்சோத்தரி தசா). This is the key to making predictions in Vedic Astrology!
What is Dasha? - தசா என்றால் என்ன?
Understanding the Dasha System
Dasha (दशा/தசா) literally means “state” or “period” in Sanskrit.
Simple Explanation: Imagine life as a 120-year journey where you’re driving through 9 different zones, each controlled by a different planet. Each zone has its own characteristics and duration.
- In the Sun zone (6 years), Sun’s significations dominate your life
- In the Moon zone (10 years), Moon’s themes are prominent
- And so on…
Key Concepts:
1. Mahadasha (மகா தசா) - Major Period
- The main planetary period
- Each planet rules for a fixed number of years
- Total cycle: 120 years
2. Antardasha/Bhukti (அந்தர தசா/புக்தி) - Sub-Period
- Subdivisions within Mahadasha
- Each Mahadasha is divided into 9 Antardashas (one for each planet)
- Gives more refined timing
3. Pratyantardasha (பிரத்யந்தர தசா) - Sub-sub-period
- Further subdivisions of Antardasha
- Used for very precise timing
4. Sookshma & Prana Dashas
- Even finer divisions (used by advanced astrologers)
Why Vimshottari System?
Vimshottari (विंशोत्तरी/விம்சோத்தரி) = Vimsho (विंशो/20) + Uttara (उत्तर/beyond) = “120 years”
Why this system is most popular:
- ✅ Most accurate for general predictions
- ✅ Based on Moon’s Nakshatra at birth
- ✅ Covers complete human lifespan (120 years)
- ✅ Time-tested over thousands of years
- ✅ Used in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam astrology
Other Dasha Systems (less common):
- Ashtottari Dasha (108 years) - used in Kerala
- Yogini Dasha (36 years)
- Kala Chakra Dasha
- Chara Dasha (Jaimini system)
In this guide, we focus on Vimshottari - the standard system.

Balance of Dasha at Birth
Important Concept:
You’re rarely born at the exact beginning of a Dasha. Usually, you’re born partway through a planet’s Dasha.
Example:
- If born in Bharani Nakshatra (Venus Dasha = 20 years)
- You might be born with only 15 years of Venus Dasha remaining
- The first 5 years of the Venus Dasha period have already “elapsed” based on your exact degree in the Nakshatra
How to Calculate Balance:
Each Nakshatra = 13°20’ (divided into 4 padas of 3°20’ each)
Formula: Balance of Dasha = (Remaining degrees in Nakshatra / Total degrees) × Total Dasha period
Example Calculation:
- Born in Rohini Nakshatra at 12° (Moon Dasha = 10 years)
- Rohini spans 10°00’ to 23°20’ in Taurus
- If Moon is at 12° in Taurus, you’ve covered 2° of Rohini
- Remaining: 11°20’ out of 13°20’
- Balance = (11°20’ / 13°20’) × 10 years ≈ 8.5 years of Moon Dasha remaining
Practical Tip: Your Jathagam report will show the exact balance. You don’t need to calculate manually!

Antardasha (Sub-Periods) - அந்தர தசா
Understanding Antardashas
Each Mahadasha is divided into 9 Antardashas (sub-periods), one for each planet.
Structure:
- Each planet’s Mahadasha has 9 Antardashas
- The first Antardasha is always of the Mahadasha lord itself
- Then proceeds in the standard order: Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury
Duration Formula: Antardasha duration = (Mahadasha years × Antardasha years) / 120
Venus Mahadasha Antardashas (Example)
Venus Mahadasha = 20 years, divided into 9 Antardashas:
| Antardasha அந்தர தசா | Duration காலம் | Calculation | Effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venus-Venus (சுக்-சுக்) | 3 years 4 months | (20×20)/120 | Peak luxury, marriage, prosperity |
| Venus-Sun (சுக்-சூ) | 1 year | (20×6)/120 | Career boost, authority with comfort |
| Venus-Moon (சுக்-ச) | 1 year 8 months | (20×10)/120 | Emotional happiness, public popularity |
| Venus-Mars (சுக்-செ) | 1 year 2 months | (20×7)/120 | Property purchase, passion, energy |
| Venus-Rahu (சுக்-ரா) | 3 years | (20×18)/120 | Foreign luxury, material desires |
| Venus-Jupiter (சுக்-கு) | 2 years 8 months | (20×16)/120 | Children, wealth, wisdom with comfort |
| Venus-Saturn (சுக்-ச) | 3 years 2 months | (20×19)/120 | Delayed pleasures, discipline in luxury |
| Venus-Mercury (சுக்-பு) | 2 years 10 months | (20×17)/120 | Business success, communication |
| Venus-Ketu (சுக்-கே) | 1 year 2 months | (20×7)/120 | Spiritual detachment from luxuries |
Total: 20 years
How to Interpret Antardasha Effects
The combined effect of Mahadasha + Antardasha planets determines the result:
Rule of Thumb:
- Both benefic (e.g., Venus-Jupiter): Excellent period
- Both malefic (e.g., Saturn-Mars): Challenging period
- Mixed (e.g., Venus-Saturn): Moderate, some delays in comforts
House Position Matters:
- If both planets are well-placed in chart: Very good
- If Antardasha lord is stronger: Sub-period overrides
- If both in Dusthanas (6, 8, 12): Difficult period
Friendship Matters:
- Friends (e.g., Jupiter-Sun): Harmonious
- Enemies (e.g., Saturn-Mars): Conflicts and obstacles
- Neutral: Moderate effects
Example: Venus-Jupiter Antardasha (2 years 8 months):
- Best period in Venus Mahadasha
- Both benefics, natural friends
- Perfect for: Marriage, children, wealth, education
- Expect: Prosperity, happiness, growth
Venus-Saturn Antardasha (3 years 2 months):
- Challenging within Venus Mahadasha
- Venus wants pleasure, Saturn wants discipline
- Effects: Delayed gratification, restricted luxuries, but stable growth
- Good for: Long-term investments, serious relationships
Pratyantardasha (Sub-Sub-Periods)
Finer Timing with Pratyantardasha
Each Antardasha is further divided into 9 Pratyantardashas for even more precise timing.
Formula: Pratyantardasha duration = (Mahadasha × Antardasha × Pratyantardasha) / 14,400
Example: Venus-Venus-Venus Pratyantardasha = (20 × 20 × 20) / 14,400 = 0.55 years = 6 months 20 days
When to Use:
- For precise event timing (exact month of marriage, job change, etc.)
- Advanced astrologers use this for Muhurtham selection
- Most people focus on Mahadasha and Antardasha level
Progression: Venus-Venus Antardasha (3 yrs 4 months) contains:
- Venus-Venus-Venus (6m 20d)
- Venus-Venus-Sun (2m)
- Venus-Venus-Moon (3m 10d)
- Venus-Venus-Mars (2m 10d)
- Venus-Venus-Rahu (6m)
- Venus-Venus-Jupiter (5m 10d)
- Venus-Venus-Saturn (6m 10d)
- Venus-Venus-Mercury (5m 20d)
- Venus-Venus-Ketu (2m 10d)
Dasha Sandhi - Junction Periods (தசா சந்தி)
The Most Critical Times
Dasha Sandhi (दशा सन्धि/தசா சந்தி) means “junction” or “transition” between two Dashas.
What is it? The period when one Dasha ends and another begins. This is considered a critical and vulnerable time.
Types of Sandhi:
1. Mahadasha Sandhi (மகா தசா சந்தி)
- Transition between two Mahadashas
- Most critical
- Duration: Last 6 months of outgoing Dasha + First 6 months of incoming Dasha = 1 year total
2. Antardasha Sandhi (அந்தர தசா சந்தி)
- Transition between Antardashas
- Less critical than Mahadasha Sandhi
- Duration: Varies (usually few weeks)
Why Dasha Sandhi is Dangerous
Vedic Principle: “When two kings meet at the border, there’s always conflict.” Similarly, when two planetary rulers hand over power, there’s instability.
Effects During Sandhi Period:
- Confusion, uncertainty
- Health issues may arise
- Accidents or sudden events
- Mental stress, anxiety
- Important decisions go wrong
- Old Dasha’s pending karmas manifest
- New Dasha’s effects are unpredictable
Most Vulnerable Sandhis:
| Transition | Risk Level | Why Dangerous |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn → Mercury | Very High | Malefic to neutral, karmic completion |
| Mars → Rahu | Very High | Two malefics, accidents prone |
| Rahu → Jupiter | High | Shadow to benefic, sudden changes |
| Sun → Moon | Medium | Ego to emotions, identity shift |
| Venus → Sun | Medium | Pleasure to discipline |
| Jupiter → Saturn | High | Benefic to malefic, reality check |

- ❌ Marriage or important commitments
- ❌ Major investments or purchases
