What is Kaal Sarpa Dosha?

Kaal Sarpa Dosha (काल सर्प दोष/காலசர்ப தோஷம்) is one of the most discussed and feared doshas in Vedic Astrology.

Sanskrit Meaning:

• Kaal (काल) = Time, Death (Lord Yama)
• Sarpa (सर्प) = Serpent, Snake
• Kaal Sarpa = “Serpent of Time” or “Death Serpent”

Definition: When ALL 7 planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are positioned between Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart, Kaal Sarpa Dosha is formed.

Visual Understanding:

Think of Rahu and Ketu as the head and tail of a serpent that has swallowed all the planets:

How to Identify Kaal Sarpa Dosha

Step-by-Step Identification:

1. Draw the Rahu-Ketu Axis:

• Note which house Rahu is in
• Ketu will be exactly opposite (7 houses away)
• Draw an imaginary line between them

2. Check All 7 Planets:

• Are ALL 7 planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) on ONE SIDE of this axis?
• If YES → Kaal Sarpa Dosha exists
• If NO (even ONE planet outside) → No full Kaal Sarpa Dosha

Example 1: Kaal Sarpa Present

• Rahu in 1st house, Ketu in 7th house
• All planets in houses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (one side)
• No planets in houses 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (other side)
• Result: Kaal Sarpa Dosha confirmed

Example 2: No Kaal Sarpa

• Rahu in 1st house, Ketu in 7th house
• Planets in houses 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (one side)
• But Jupiter in 10th house (other side)
• Result: No Kaal Sarpa (one planet escaped the serpent)

Full vs Partial Kaal Sarpa

Important Consideration: Some astrologers consider planets conjunct with Rahu or Ketu (within 5-10°) as “outside” the dosha, offering some relief.
