Understanding the Jathagam Chart - ஜாதக அட்டவணை

Two Essential Charts: Rasi & Navamsa

Every Complete Tamil Jathagam Has TWO Main Charts:

1. Rasi Chart (ராசி அட்டவணை) - D1 Chart (Birth Chart)
2. Navamsa Chart (அம்சம் அட்டவணை) - D9 Chart (Divisional Chart)

Why TWO Charts?

Rasi Chart (ராசி):

• What: Main birth chart based on planetary positions at birth time

Tamil/South Indian Chart Format

Two Main Chart Formats:

1. South Indian Chart (Tamil/Kerala style) - Diamond/Square shape, houses are fixed
2. North Indian Chart - Square with houses that rotate

Understanding Navamsa Chart (அம்சம்)

What is Navamsa (D9)?

Navamsa (நவாம்சம்) = Nav (9) + Amsa (division)

• Each of 12 Rasis is divided into 9 equal parts of 3°20’ each
• Total 108 Navamsas (12 × 9 = 108, sacred number!)
• Planet’s position in which Navamsa it falls → Navamsa chart placement

How Navamsa is Calculated:

Example Calculation:

• Planet at Pisces 15°30’ in Rasi
• Pisces is Water sign → Starts from Cancer
• 15°30’ ÷ 3°20’ = 4.65 → 5th Navamsa
• Cancer + 4 signs = Scorpio Navamsa
